Bookstagram – Growing my account and yours

1751 insta followers as of 3/2/23

I’ve had my bookstagram account for a few years now and I’ve been stuck at around the same number for a few years, and I can pinpoint a few of the main reasons for it. At the start of March I had a total of 1,751 followers, so let’s see how we can change that!

For a long time I didn’t have a general ascetic: I would find a general vibe I liked and resonated with but then switch it up a month or two later. Looking through my photos there was no real theme and it looks a bit chaotic.

Consistent posting: I’ve had a few mental health struggles over the last few years and part of that has led social media (including this blog) to feel like a chore and not a fun hobby. Because of this I have been really inconsistent with posting, and in order to grow your account you need to be continuously active and engage with people.

So how do you actually grow your account?

I’m going through various online lists of how to grow your account and we’re going to see what works and what doesn’t! The goal is to get to 10,000.

As a reminder, I do use my bookstagram as a fun hobby. I currently do receive some ARC’s because of it, but my motivation has never been free books or to monetize. Because of bookstagram I have made some amazing friends, I’ve found an incredible group of people to form a monthly book club with, and have truly had fun on this platform.

The motivation behind this post and trying to gain followers is because there’s so much misinformation about growing Instagram accounts and so much pressure to do so. People buy followers or quit doing something they enjoy because they lack the validation that comes with social media. It’s important to remember that you need to do things for YOU. Even with trying to grow my follower count and increase the overall size and “like-ability” of my account, at the end of the day this account is for me. It’s a way for me to show off books that I love, to get creative and fun, and to connect with my friends and other people who love reading as much as I do. If monetizing and gaining followers is your main goal that’s perfectly fine! Just try not to burn yourself out on it!

Happy reading loves and I’m excited to see where this journey goes together!
